Letter from Executive Director

Welcome to The 5th Avenue Theatre!

It’s my absolute pleasure to welcome you to the start of The 5th’s 2024/25 season! I’m Bill Berry, and though I’ve been in my role as Executive Director for just over five months, I’ve had the immense privilege of working at this remarkable theater for many years. I’m thrilled to begin this season with one of the most beloved stories of all time—Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins.

Our holiday production is always a special time of year at The 5th. It’s a season where we gather with friends, family, and loved ones to share in the joy of musical theater. And it indeed is the perfect way to celebrate the holidays, offering a chance to make lasting memories while also contributing to the vibrancy of downtown Seattle’s economy. Your visit here supports not only the arts but also local businesses. But why stop with the holidays? Why not enjoy moments like these all year long? There are more sensational events and musicals at The 5th that will give you the same feeling you have tonight. Buy a pair of tickets, buy a subscription, make a donation—make The 5th your musical theater home!

I know you’re here because, like me, you love musicals and the absolute magic they bring. As we move into The 5th’s future, I invite you to join us as we look to the next 100 years. We have so many incredible productions and moments ahead, and your support makes it all possible.

Thank you for joining us for this supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (I had to do it) show! I look forward to sharing many more unforgettable seasons with you and your loved ones.

RICHARD M. SHERMAN and ROBERT B. SHERMAN (Music & Lyrics) The Sherman Brothers’ career as leading composer/lyricists in family entertainment spans almost 50 years and includes two Academy Awards Best Score and Best Song for Mary Poppins. The work of the brothers Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman is enjoying a fresh chapter of success in musical theatre with sensational stage revivals of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Mary Poppins now playing across the UK. Chitty originally opened in the West End in 2002 going on to become the longest-running musical ever at the London Palladium, before playing Broadway and beyond, garnering huge international success. The stage production of Mary Poppins, co-produced by Disney and Cameron Mackintosh, opened to critical acclaim in London in 2004, winning two Olivier Awards, with the Broadway production running for six years. The Jungle Book, another Shermans/Disney favourite, has also recently made the screen-to-stage transition, premiering at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. The Sherman Brothers gained recognition in popular music with several top-ten hits - among them You’re Sixteen, Let’s Get Together and Tall Paul. 1960 marked the start of a phenomenal 10 year association with Walt Disney, during which time they composed over 150 songs for his films, TV shows, Disneyland and other theme parks. Their Disney credits include the films The Jungle Book, The Parent Trap, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, The Sword and the Stone, The Aristocats, The Happiest Millionaire, the Winnie the Pooh series, and of course Mary Poppins. They also wrote the most translated and performed song on earth, “It’s a Small World (After All)”. They went on to compose song scores for Snoopy Come Home, Charlotte’s Web, the Broadway hit musical Over Here! and the ‘fantasmagorical’ Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - with its Oscar nominated title song. The Sherman Brothers created screenplays and song scores for Tom Sawyer (their music won First Prize at the Moscow Film Festival), Huckleberry Finn, the 1976 Royal Film Performance The Slipper and the Rose (with co-author Bryan Forbes), and The Magic of Lassie which also earned them their 9th Academy Award nomination for Best Song. More recent credits include the book Walt’s Time - a wonderful autobiographical and pictorial journey through their song-writing years; the Disney hit animated feature The Tigger Movie, the stage musical Busker Alley starring Tommy Tune in the United States and Beverly Hills Cop 3. In addition to their Oscars, other honours awarded to the Sherman Brothers include 3 Grammys, 24 Gold and Platinum Albums, as well as a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame. Robert Sherman died peacefully in London in March 2012. Richard Sherman died in Beverly Hills in May 2024.

CAMERON MACKINTOSH (Co-Creator) has been producing shows since 1967 and remains the world’s most prolific producer of musicals in theatre history. As well as producing three of the world’s longest running musicals – Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera and Cats – his legendary productions include Miss Saigon, Oliver!, Mary Poppins (co-produced with Disney), Side By Side By Sondheim, Little Shop of Horrors, Song and Dance, Tomfoolery, Martin Guerre, The Witches of Eastwick and Five Guys Named Moe. His acclaimed productions of My Fair Lady, Oklahoma! and Carousel have all been international successes, as have his reinvented new productions of Les Misérables, Miss Saigon and The Phantom of the Opera. Cameron is also co-producer with Jeffrey Seller of Hamilton in London. In 2013, alongside Working Title Films and Universal, Cameron produced the hugely successful Oscar®, Golden Globe and BAFTA award-winning film adaptation of Les Misérables, which is one of the most successful movies ever of an original stage musical. The concert version of Les Misérables, which was first staged in 1989 at Domain Park in Sydney, has proved to be just as successful as the staged musical around the world. It has been filmed three times – at the Royal Albert Hall, the O2 Arena and the Gielgud Theatre – and is continually rescreened on TV and in cinemas throughout the world and, alongside his spectacular Royal Albert Hall production of The Phantom of the Opera, regularly breaks attendance records for live recording performances of musical theatre. Cameron owns and operates eight historic London theatres, which have all been spectacularly rebuilt and refurbished for the 21st century. They house many of London’s most successful hits. The Sondheim, formerly known as the Queen’s, now has a glorious auditorium and backstage and has been renamed in honour of Cameron’s great friend, theatrical legend Stephen Sondheim, who recently died. The last show he and Cameron were working on, Old Friends, premiered onstage and then TV as a sensational all-star gala last year and is now opening at the Gielgud this September for a limited season with a terrific cast including many of those from the gala, headed by Broadway legends Bernadette Peters and Lea Salonga. In 1990, Cameron inaugurated the Chair of Contemporary Theatre at St Catherine’s College in Oxford University, with Stephen Sondheim as his visiting professor. Music Theatre International, the world’s largest owner of secondary rights of many of the greatest musicals ever written, is now one of Cameron’s companies. Cameron was knighted in the 1996 New Year’s Honours for his services to British theatre and in June 2023, was awarded the Freedom of the City of London. He is the first British producer ever to be elected to Broadway’s Theater Hall of Fame.

In Memory of Bruce Pym

1942–2024

The 5th Avenue Theatre acknowledges the passing of Bruce Pym, a cherished member of our theater family who dedicated countless years to the growth and success of our organization. Bruce’s journey with The 5th began in the late 1970s, when he, as a young lawyer, played a pivotal role in creating the legal documents to establish the 5th Avenue Musical Theatre Company, which opened its doors in 1980.

From 1998 to 2000, Bruce led the board as its chair, and it was under his visionary leadership that the decision was made to appoint The 5th’s first-ever producing artistic director, David Armstrong. This decision was a turning point, propelling The 5th to its current status as a leading musical theater company in the nation. He and the board recognized the importance of defining an artistic vision, a step that helped clarify The 5th’s value as a not-for-profit organization with a meaningful community benefit.

Following his board tenure, Bruce took on the role of co-chair of the Board Emeritus Committee and always stayed connected to the theatre’s mission and plans. Bruce was a cherished friend, a respected leader, and a guiding mentor to all. We will forever be grateful for his invaluable contributions and the enduring legacy he leaves behind. From all of us at The 5th—a heartfelt thank you, Bruce, for your incredible dedication to our organization. A grateful theater salutes you!
