An interview with “Mexodus” creators and big news from Cal Shakes

The Bay Area is full of new creations while we say goodbye to a beloved institution.

An interview with “Mexodus” creators and big news from Cal Shakes
Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson in Mexodus, the electrifying live-looping musical, performing at Berkeley Repertory Theatre.

Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson first crossed paths in February 2020, just before the world took a sudden turn. During the pandemic, with everything from a global health crisis to a deep racial reckoning unfolding, they committed themselves to researching and co-writing Mexodus.

Since then, they’ve brought their vision to stages in Baltimore, Washington, DC, and now, to Berkeley Rep. To dive deeper into their journey, Mexodus Director and Berkeley Rep’s Associate Artistic Director, David Mendizábal, sat down with Brian and Nygel to chat about their creative process, inspirations, and what makes this live-looping, hip-hop musical so special.

This week brings a mix of disappointing news from Cal Shakes and an exciting new video project from SF Opera.

  • Extremely upsetting news has been announced today from Cal Shakes—after 50 years of providing the Bay Area with Shakespeare and classical theatre, the organization is suspending operations and preparing for closure. Executive Director Clive Worsley shared, “We are grateful to you for everything you have done to make Cal Shakes the venerable institution it has been for the past 50 years.”
  • It's movie time with the San Francisco Opera. A Journey into Lohengrin takes you behind the scenes of preparing a musical masterpiece for the stage. With Music Director Eun Sun Kim leading the way, you’ll see how all the different elements of Wagner’s epic come together, giving you a unique look at the intricate process of staging such a monumental opera.
  • Join the club and get $20 tickets to Lester Lynch and Kevin Korth at Cal Performances. By becoming a part of the email club, you’ll get exclusive discounts, making the performing arts more accessible to all.
That’s a wrap. Be sure to explore the fantastic performing arts events lined up this week.
