Big news from your favorite Seattle stages. ACT Contemporary Theatre (ACT) and Seattle Shakespeare Company (SSC) are joining forces to create a new theatre experience at Union Street: two amazing organizations coming together under one roof in downtown Seattle.

ACT and SSC are exploring a merger, bringing together their creative energies to make something truly special. Imagine the best of contemporary and classical theatre all in one historic spot. This partnership will not only revitalize our downtown but also offer incredible opportunities for local artists and more groundbreaking shows for all to enjoy. Both ACT and SSC have a history of bold and innovative performances. After a stellar 2023/24 season with packed houses and rave reviews, they see this as the perfect time to combine their strengths. By merging, they’ll amplify their impact on the community and focus on their missions.

“Seattle’s theatre community is built on collaboration. This merger continues that tradition."

The exploration is being led by ACT Artistic Director John Langs and SSC Executive Director John Bradshaw. With the full backing of both boards, these leaders are committed to making this transition smooth and successful. John Langs from ACT said, “This merger is about more than just our theatres; it’s about giving back to Seattle. By coming together, we can help rejuvenate downtown and create a vibrant arts center in our beloved Eagles Auditorium Building.” SSC’s John Bradshaw added, “Seattle’s theatre community is built on collaboration. This merger continues that tradition, combining nearly 100 years of theatrical excellence to create something even more impactful.”

Michael Greer, President and CEO of ArtsFund, is thrilled about this potential partnership. He said, “This creative solution showcases the strength of Seattle’s arts community. It’s the kind of thinking that can forge stronger connections and open new opportunities for everyone involved.”

So, get ready for an even more vibrant and dynamic theatre scene in Seattle. We can’t wait to see you at the shows and share this exciting journey with you.
