April 24–28, 2024 | The beloved Disney story is brought to thrilling theatrical life.
In This Program
Welcome to Disney’s Aladdin
On behalf of all of us at Seattle Theatre Group, welcome to the historic Paramount Theatre and this performance of Disney’s Aladdin! Based on Disney’s 1992 animated feature film of the same name, Aladdin features exemplary music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman, Tim Rice, and Chad Beguelin, and takes the audience on a magic carpet ride through poignant depictions of honor, identity, and the power of friendship. I’m thrilled that you’re here to experience the magic with us.
STG and Disney Theatrical Productions share a long-time commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. During this engagement of Aladdin, we are proud to produce a sensory-friendly performance on Saturday, April 27 at 2:00 PM. Sensory-friendly performances provide a supportive and judgement-free environment for people affected by sensory processing challenges and their families. I would like to thank Sensory Access, led by Dr. Ferdico, for their continued support around sensory-friendly performances which help STG pursue our vision of being a place where all are welcomed!
Another accessibility opportunity that we are excited to offer is Touch Tours, a beta program for our blind and low vision community members during audio described performances. Touch Tours are a tactile introduction to the sets, props, and costumes. To learn more about the Touch Tour beta program and sign up for upcoming Touch Tour performances, please reach out to stgece@stgpresents.org.
And finally, our online auction for DOORS: Opening Doors to the Arts, STG’s annual fundraiser, launches on Friday, April 26 and closes on May 4. The auction features unique items, artist merch and memorabilia, show tickets, exciting behind-the-scenes experiences, and much more. The best part of our online auction is that you can participate from anywhere! DOORS and its silent auction support STG’s mission to create enriching experiences in the arts (including sensory-friendly performances!), engage diverse communities, and steward our three incredible historic theatres—the Paramount, Moore, and Neptune. I hope you’ll participate in the online auction and secure unique experiences and memorabilia that support the arts. Visit stgpresents.org/doors to place your bids today.
I want to thank you, our patrons, for your ongoing support. Attending live performances in our community helps build and maintain a strong and thriving arts sector in Seattle. We cannot do what we do without YOU!
Kindest Regards,
Josh LaBelle

HOWARD ASHMAN (Lyrics). Best known as the pivotal creative mind behind The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast (which is dedicated to “Our friend, Howard Ashman, who gave a Mermaid her voice and a Beast his soul…”), Ashman’s first love was theatre. He was a founder of Off-Off-Broadway’s renowned WPA Theatre, where he conceived, wrote and directed the classic musical Little Shop of Horrors as well as God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater (both music by Alan Menken). A new cast recording of Rosewater will be available soon from Sh-K-Boom records. In 1986, Ashman wrote and directed the Broadway musical Smile (music by Marvin Hamlisch). Lamented as a lost treasure of the 1980s theatre scene, Smile remains popular on high school and college campuses throughout the country. Ashman’s family is thrilled that Ashman and Menken’s original songs for Aladdin, some of which were cut in the making of the film, as well as portions of Ashman’s original film treatment, have been reinstated in the theatrical production. Howard Ashman died in 1991 from complications of AIDS. For more information, please visit howardashman.com.

In November 1997, Disney made theatrical history with the opening of The Lion King, which received six 1998 Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Director, Julie Taymor, who became the first woman in Broadway history to the win the award. Surpassing 25 landmark years on Broadway, it has welcomed 112 million visitors worldwide to date and has nine productions currently running worldwide. Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida opened on Broadway next, winning four 2000 Tony Awards. It was followed by Mary Poppins, a co-production with Cameron Mackintosh, which opened in London in 2004 and went on to enjoy a six-year Tony-winning Broadway run. Tarzan®, Tony-nominated for its 2006 Broadway premiere, went on to become an international hit with an award-winning production enjoying a ten-year run in Germany.
