Girl From the North Country

June 25–30, 2024 | A new musical that reimagines 20 legendary songs of Bob Dylan.

In This Program

Welcome

A Note From Seattle Theatre Group

On behalf of Seattle Theatre Group’s staff, board, and volunteers, thank you for joining us and welcome to the historic Paramount Theatre for this performance of Girl From the North Country

When I heard there was a musical in development based on Bob Dylan’s music, I felt both excitement and skepticism. It would be fair to label me a Dylan freak. His music changed everything for me—it opened my mind and inspired a life dedicated to music and the arts. As a bit of a punk rock kid growing up in Los Angeles, hearing D. Boon from The Minutemen sing “Mr. Narrator, this is Bob Dylan to me, my story could be his songs,” somehow kept me curious and chasing the arts. But still, I wondered why a piece of theatre that centered these nearly sacred (to me) Dylan songs was needed.

When I learned the writer and director was Conor McPherson, my foolish skepticism vanished! In fact, the combination of Dylan and McPherson was just about the most exciting thing I could imagine! Hailing from Dublin and of an entirely different generation, McPherson’s theatrical work is staggering and includes The Seafarer, Shining City, and Uncle Vanya. And let’s face it, he must also be a Dylan freak to sign up for such a challenge!

The story you’re about to experience is set in a place and time that was formative in Bob Dylan’s history—the Great Depression in Duluth, Minnesota. After a successful run at London’s Old Vic in the summer of 2017, Girl From the North Country transferred to the West End, then Off-Broadway, and finally to Broadway one week before the COVID-19 closure. Resilient like the characters it portrays, this remarkable show went back to Broadway in October 2021 and then found a life touring on the road. Nominated for seven Tony Awards, with Simon Hale taking home a trophy for Best Orchestrations, very few songwriters capture the American spirit the way Dylan has done in his 60-year career. We’re honored to have this company with us in Seattle and on our stage.

One of my favorite Dylan quotes is, “He not busy being born is busy dying.” We’re grateful that you’ve chosen to be “busy” with us here, spending time in community and celebrating our collective love for the arts. Please sit back, relax, and enjoy the music. And again, thank you for your patronage.

Kindest Regards,

Josh LaBelle
Executive Director
